University of Thessaly

University of Thessaly (UTH) was founded in 1984 and its basic offices are located in Volos. Today, with its 37 Departments and 8 schools,  it constitutes the third biggest University in Greece. University of Thessaly provides 105 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, as well as extra-curricular modules in specific research and business fields. UTH works in partnership with European and overseas institutions to facilitate academic exchanges, research collaborations and jointly organized academic programs (intensive courses, summer schools etc.) with other Higher Education Institutions. Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1985, welcoming the first students in the academic year 1990-1991. Since its foundation it has earned a distinguished reputation, nationally and internationally, for its quality of teaching and research. It has been the first faculty established since the opening of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Thessaly, it has been autonomous since 1995 and it is operating in the city of Larissa. Among the Medical Schools of Greece, it is the latest founded and it is located in the University Campus named “Viopolis” at “Mezourlo”, near the University Hospital of Larissa and in the city center at the “Katsigra” building. The Campus of the School of Health Sciences comprises auditoriums, lecture halls and workshops rooms, laboratories, a library, the Secretariat and offices of the academic staff members. This campus, the newest among the Greek University Campuses, far from the boisterous vibes of the city center, it is surrounded by nature with a large area of green, ready to host the students during their free time.

University Hospital

The University Hospital of Larissa was established and launched on 27/09/1999. The purpose of the hospital is to provide secondary and especially tertiary healthcare to citizens, to support the operation of University clinics, workshops and special units of the Faculty of Medicine and to train young doctors and other health care professionals along with the research development in the health sector. The University Hospital has some of the most modern facilities, infrastructure and medical equipment. Due to the small number of medical students per year, medical training takes place for small groups of students in the hospital, giving them the opportunity to practise medicine using contemporary methods and equipment. 

The city of Larissa

Larisa ranks among the five biggest cities of Greece, with approximately 300,000 residents, and it is the capital of the Thessaly prefecture. Nowadays, it is a major commercial and industrial center of Greece, with rich agricultural and livestock production. What is notable for this city, is that it is mostly flat, without many uphill or downhill ways, as it is located in a valley and is crossed by the river Pineios. Larissa is called “the city of coffee” because of the number of cafeterias operating in the city’s squares, that are always full of people enjoying their time. Larissa is a city with a lot of natural beauty, like the Pineios river and the Alkazar park, including small lakes, bike paths, an outdoor theater, the monument of the National Resistance; opposite the park stands the Alkazar stadium which is part of the National Sports Center of Larissa and also the tomb of Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine”, who lived and died in Larissa. Some more of the most important sights of the city are the two Ancient Theaters and the old Fortress of the city since ancient and the Byzantine period, that now is the ornament of the city with plenty of cafeterias, bars and restaurants, offering Larissa a youthful character, as many of the citizens are students.
