Ioannina

Ioannina, often called Yannena within Greece, is the capital and largest city of Epirus, an administrative region in north-western Greece and its population is 112,486. It lies at an elevation of approximately 500 metres above sea level, on the western shore of lake Pamvotis (Παμβώτις).
Ioannina is located 450 km northwest of Athens, 290 kilometres southwest of Thessaloniki and 80 km east of the port of Igoumenitsa in the Ionian Sea. The islet of the lake, which houses a small settlement and various monuments and sights such as the last house of Ali Pasha, is also worth mentioning.
The Epirus Region is located in the western part of Greece, and is divided into four regional units (formerly prefectures), which are: Thesprotia, Ioannina, Arta and Preveza. The biggest prefecture is this of Ioannina and the main city is Ioannina with merely 1/3 of the population.
Set on the bank of Lake Pamvotis in 500m altitude, it fascinates everyone with its beauty and its warm atmosphere, despite the generally cold climate. It is a lively city of 130,000 inhabitants, which carries a history of centuries. Each alley and square, each part of the
city echo its great tradition. The combination of innumerable historical monuments and museums with the unbelievable natural beauty of the landscape is a guarantee for the visitors. The castle of Ioannina, Lake Pamvotis with the island, the cave, the fabulous ancient city with its traditional stores and its exceptional market give no other choice to the visitors but attract their attention and captivate them. It is a city that combines just about everything.

University of Ioannina
The University of Ioannina is a university located 5 km southwest of Ioannina, Greece. The university was founded in 1964, as a charter of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and became an independent university in 1970. As of 2014, there is a student population of 15,000 enrolled at the university (11,000 at the undergraduate level and 4,000 at the postgraduate level).
