Medical Specialties

Since 2009, more than 7500 doctors have left Greece, seeking for specialty practice abroad. It is also a fact that unemployment and under-employment among doctors has reached 25%. Meanwhile, it is questionable whether the six years of studies truly prepare students for what they are going to face after graduation.

Choosing a medical specialty is not an easy decision and every medical student should be well informed about the difficulties and the available options after graduation. This is how Medical Specialties project was created, a project designed to address the problem and inform students about the possible options they have after medical school. It also aims to inform students about the criteria they shall have in mind in order to make the best choice.

The project consists of three parts.

  • The first part includes speeches concerning post graduate studies, like master and PhD studies and also information about medical practice in rural communities
  • In the second part expert doctors talk about their own specialty and how it is served in Greece
  • Finally, the students are provided with information about the medical specialty in foreign countries, like the U.S.A., United Kingdom, France and so on

The program is being carried out in collaboration with Medical Schools and the Career Centers of Medical Schools, in Alexandroupolis, Heraklion and Ioannina.
